Security
Be aware that while your information may be secure on BuyOnIt servers, there are other ways that individuals might acquire
you personal information. Phishing, Identity Theft, Email Spoofing, Password Cracking and Social Engineering are just a
few of the techniques used. One way to prevent from being a target is to make your self aware of the techniques that
they use. We have listed a few below and if you have any further questions pertaining to your internet security, we
encourage you to visit http://www.wikipedia.org and search internet/computer security.
- Phishing - is a criminal activity using social engineering techniques. Phishers attempt to fraudulently acquire
sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity
in an electronic communication. Phishing is typically carried out by email or instant messaging, and often directs
users to give details at a website, although phone contact has been used as well. Attempts to deal with the growing
number of reported phishing incidents include legislation, user training, and technical measures.
- Identity Theft – the deliberate appropriation of someone else's identity (without that person's permission) for
criminal purposes
- Email Spoofing – is a term used to describe fraudulent email activity in which the sender address and other
parts of the email header are altered to appear as though the email originated from a different source. E-mail spoofing is a technique commonly used for spam e-mail and phishing to hide the origin of an e-mail message. By changing certain properties of the e-mail, such as the From, Return-Path and Reply-To fields (which can be found in the message header), ill-intentioned users can make the e-mail appear to be from someone other than the actual sender.
- Password Cracking – is the process of recovering secret passwords from data that has been stored in or transmitted
by a computer system. A common approach is to repeatedly try guesses for the password. The purpose of password cracking
might be to help a user recover a forgotten password (though installing an entirely new password is less of a security risk, but involves system administration privileges), to gain unauthorized access to a system, or as a preventive measure by system administrators to check for easily crackable passwords.
- Social Engineering – is a collection of techniques used to manipulate people into performing actions or divulging
confidential information. While similar to a confidence trick or simple fraud, the term typically applies to trickery
for information gathering or computer system access and in most cases the attacker never comes face-to-face with the victim.
